Alexander Lernet-Holenia was an Austrian poet, novelist, dramaturgist and writer.
He was one of the few accomplished Austrian authors who kept his distance from National Socialism, and refused to endorse Nazi system.
The Glory is Departed starts when the soldiers swore to their emperor to fidelity to death before they go to the First World War. Alexander Lernet-Holenia's novel  interweaves the romantic love story and the dramatic events of war.
The flames have sputtered high up. The flags have been devoured by the flames. The flags because of which for centuries the regiments have been killed, eagles which have been the symbol of Empire`s honour, war amenities of the death, have snapped and  burned. The breakage of shaft have been constantly heard, always new bundles of sacred silk have fallen into flame, The emperor have allowed to burn the flags returned by the dead. At that moment I have pulled out the banner which I have worn over my heart and throw it in the fire.
llustration presents railroad without a train and a symbol of monarchy turned upside down. The flag of the monarchy is deliberately left out, because all flags and all portents at the end of the book have been burned into flames. Everything soldiers fought for doesn’t exist anymore.
