The Grand Canyon Travel Poster: Typography Project

PORTFOLIO PIECE 6
Title:  Grand Canyon Typography Project
Media Type: Poster
Purpose: To use fonts in a unique way to design a travel poster representing supplied content.
I was given a choice of photos, a few sentences of content and the task to design a travel poster referencing the specified content. I chose this photo because of the beautiful shadows and the open areas where inserting text would not block the focal point of the image.
I referenced strategies and theories of hierarchy, proximity and similarity to incorporate the text in a meaningful and visually appealing way. Each piece of content demonstrates the use of different font types (Bold, Light etc.) to present the content in a way that flows, maximizes space and unites the related content.
Using the image to construct the font background created an almost seamless transition from the large Grand Canyon text to the left of the picture to the interesting background image. Using the white font to the bottom right of the image and keeping the related content within a good proximity of each other and on the same line, brings lightness to the dark shadows of the image while presenting the statistical data appropriately.  I purposefully left extra space below the statistical data to represent a new topic and the call to action. It looks as if it this content standing alone which allows it to stand out, however not in such a way that it is distracting.
The text is placed strategically and the size of the text creates a three-tier effect that moves the eye smoothly from left to right concluding with the call to action which is visiting the website to plan a trip.
