SENSE
of sight and smell
A single familiarscent can invoke memories compared to looking at an old image. SENSE is not anyother kind of exhibition where you can only see. Here, we play with with otherhuman sense that people usually neglect, smell.

Theartworks that are displaying in this exhibition are created by Japanese artistbased on inspirations from Issey Miyake perfume. You’ll be invited to smell thescent while looking at the artworks and this is how both of your sense of sight and smell will be stimulated.
The theme of this exhibition is minimalismand elegance. Both are styles and characteristics often identified with theIssey Miyake brand. Minimalism is highly focused in thisexhibition to suggest the most basic of elements coming together to trigger asensorial experience for the audience. This theme is important to eliminatedistractions from compromising the carefully executed experience.
The typeface used for our exhibition masthead is Futura because ithas a neutral quality in its thin strokes that suit the concept of theexhibition. The center stroke in N is modified thinner so that it becomes athin line that reflects the other two alphabet of the word SENSE. Thisreflecting typography is to convey the idea of how the artworks shown and thescents that inspire them are actually a reflection of one another.
Other than the line, another basicelement that we used are triangles. The name Issey Miyake contains the numberthree in Japanese. This basic element is used to repetitively to form anintriguing shape that is supposed to represent the visualization of scents.Triangles also reflect the simple yet sleek identity that the brand possess.

The colour palette we used are lightpastels colour. This is to show the neutrality and minimalism of the concept.

The background of the three posters canbe joined to form a bigger picture. This is reflective of Japanese minimalistartworks that we are showing.

The headline in the main poster followsthe same concept of reflection. It’s meant to show how scents are reflected inhow we sense them.
The first hint we show tothe public. Just a line that defines us. We hope to intrigue the public withthis simple imagery. Following two teasers will be placed in strategiclocations. The first one will be in a park where the scent of the park, freshwoody pure air, will be reflected in the poster. Thus the headline ‘Picture thesmell the picture’.
The second one will be a billboard highup, and the visuals in the billboard will reflect the scent of the open sky. The headline is cut through with aninvisible line for the two sentences, ‘picture the smell’ and ‘smell the picture’ are reflections ofone another.

The venue is in KLCC. For those who arefamiliar with the place, you will remember this long tunnel that we have to gothrough to reach the convention center. Along this long tunnel, one will beable to smell three different perfumes in the air. The idea is to follow thescent and be led to the exhibition hall.

We will utilize only one hall and set itup in a circle formation. In each of these slices within the circle, will bethe space where we set up the artworks and perfumes. These spaces arepartitioned so that one can truly experience one smell at a time and be totallyimmersed in the beauty of one artwork without being distracted by other things.

We also have designed perfume sample giving out for free. Besides, the test card is printed with representative artwork of the featured artists.
Through this exhibition, we hope to educatethe public on perfume as a form of art and not only forcosmetics. Scents can be visualized where your imagination will be reflectedinto visuals. Though both appear indifferent forms, fundamentally they are the same. Both forms stimulate sensesthat are able to inspire imagination within a person.

During the exhibition, we will have anauction to auction off all the artworks. This event is only open to invitedguests and all proceeds will be donated to the Haiti Charity Foundation. Otherthan this, we will have speeches from featured artists as well as Issey Miyakehimself. They will share their insights and experiences within the industry.
