The Boy Who Talked With Animals

The Boy Who Talked With Animals
Story by Roald Dahl
The Boy Who Talked With Animals is a short story by Roald Dahl about a young boy who saves a turtle with very curious results. The story is whimsical and has a dream like quality to it. I wanted the story’s visuals to reflect the mysterious feeling of ‘did  that really happen?’.

I used a pastel colour palette with watercolour paints and took visual references from photos of the 1960s and ‘70s as well as the colours that often come through in lomography photos. This is a call back to the time it was written in as well as to give a nostalgic tone to them. I used Courier as the typeface as another period reference as well as to add to the ‘vacation’ feeling. As well as this, I used sun-bleached paper from a second hand copy of the actual text for the text pages of the book.
