As a budding designer, I find it hard to create a lasting impression on people when I don’t have any personal branding. Like many great designers, I set out to create a cohesive, multi-platform brand that would represent my thinking and abilities. Not only did I want this brand to represent who I was today, but I wanted to create it so that I can extend it to my future personality traits. Before any design took place, I sat down and wrote out about one hundred names. To me, the most important part of branding in the 21st century is web presence. In order to establish a solid web presence, any long-form URL had to be eliminated from the running. After deciding on a list of five names: The Foundry, DGTL Labs, Simplicity Designs, HFreni, and Mountaintop Digital; I searched for domain names. I decided to use my own name to represent myself -- how fitting! Now that I had chosen the name that would represent me, I had to design and create a logo that was not only versatile but also extremely simple. The beginning of this process was the hardest because I had to decide in which direction I’d like to take the logo: Typography, Iconography, or Abstract Design. When delineating between which I logo style I should execute, I realized that while interesting, abstract design didn’t convey the message I wanted to. I found the same to be true with iconography, which led me to begin creating a beautiful typographical logo. With typography, choosing the right font is paramount to how a brand is interpreted. While futuristic and fairly synthetic in nature, I felt as if a geometric serif font would represent the brand well, due to their regularity and adaptability. I decided to use Futura PT due to how linear it was, so that spacing would be effortless, and would look impeccable. This is the personal brand I have chosen to establish!
