Abbadia Celestina

The Abbey was built around the eleventh century as a fortress subdued to the existing Montelabate Abbey. Only in the twelfth century it achieved an autonomous regime. The monks live there until 1817, and few years later the state sold the Abbey to private.
Before the '70s, the Abbey was turned into a pile of ruins, and the local owners used to take away the stones whenever they needed to renovate or build farmhouses. In 1971 it was undertaken an action of excavations that brought out the plan of the crypt and a thirteenth-century altarpiece. Later, even thanks to contribution of Dario Fo, the tower was consolidated and a theater was designed on the perimeter of the dormitory.
There is a strong connection between this project and the work done before, bringing to the spaces of the tower new life.
