Stage 4 Urban Building: School of English and Literacy

To create a school for new adult residents of Glasgow and the indigenous population to learn English language and literacy.

This mixing of different backgrounds and life experience is a characteristic of encounters in the contemporary multicultural city. There are already a number of learning institutes in the city centre but this new school will establish a new and exciting proposal for the immediate city centre.

Gordon Street can be viewed as an ‘urban hallway’ or ‘room within the city’ as the street is enclosed at both ends by Hope Street and Buchanan Street. My concept for the building is to extend this ‘room’ and create a ‘large room within a room’. At the moment there is no ‘large room along Gordon Street apart from Central Station which acts as a large contained public space within the city centre. Gordon
Street is heavily pedestrianised with people using the street as a commuter link to branch off to their destination, but there is no where really to pause. The new school could be the answer to making Gordon Street the destination.
