'Grimm's fairy-tales' Puffin competition brief

Puffin competition brief
The client for this project is a branch of Penguin – Puffin publishing, which specializes in children’s books. Puffin shares the same peculiarities of the corporate style (logo, layout), however, in the second case the books are usually more colourful, can be in a different format, the typography is usually more playful as well.

The main task of the brief is to design a whole new cover look for this classic piece of children’s literature, in order to reinvent Grimm’s Fairy Tales for a new generation of readers, encouraging children (and adults).

The concept is based on the certain peculiarities of Grimm’s fairy-tales such as the distinctive German ethnic background, mythological, enigmatic darkness aspect. The book cover design is a free shape illustration (pattern style illustration containing main characters of some famous fairy tales forming a whole world with its own inhabitants, rules etc; emphasis on ethnic background). The detailed pattern ( it symbolizes fire, water, woods) unites the elements of illustration as well a creates an atmosphere of enigma and mystery. In order to emphasize the ethnic background of the tales German traditional patterns decorate the characters, gold colour will support the overall ethnic atmosphere.
