Marking Gauges
The hand plane pt 2
This project was to demonstrate just how much you can achieve with a hand plane; each element has been shaped using the hand plane except the grove in the reference block that was cut using a router. The stem block, pin and inlay were all hand planed to square and round respectively. This process opened my eyes to what exactly could be achieved with a hand plane and how the hand plane works and its limits. For all these elements I used only one plane a number 6 (lie-nielsen).
Two of the three marking gauges, note the flat face of the stem and how it lines up with the curved inlay and pin.
The same two marking gauges, note the lack of gap around thestem, this is produced by the fact that the pin or wedge is pushing the stem upagainst the edge 'locking' it in place.
Thethird marking gauge is not actually a marking gauge but a pencil gauge I takeno ownership of this as a fellow student showed it to me and that student alsogave me the demon nut and bolt that I have used to make this pencil gauge.
A nice assemblage of the three gauges
