Urban Re-Design & Development of Tahrir Sq / WORKSHOP

SPLASH! / Urban Re-Design & Development of Tahrir Square, Cairo
WORKSHOP Facoltà di Architettura Valle Giulia, Roma / American University of Cairo
25 JANUARY, 2011: Over 50,000 protesters first occupied the square.
30 JANUARY, 2011: BBC and other correspondents reported that the number of demonstrators had grown to at least 100,000.
1 FEBRUARY, 2011: Al Jazeera reported that more than 1 million protesters peacefully gathered in the square and adjacent streets.

Our concept is directly inspired by the growing crowd of people that occupied el-Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution. Emerging from neighbouring streets and squares, this mass represents not only a group of individuals, but a shared goal and idea. The shape of our project reflects this mass of people, illustrated as a single “splash”, the source of which is the square itself, being the core of the revolution. As such, our project appears a single growing body, much like the protestors of the revolution and their influence around the world. Like the revolution, this fearless growing body acts in surprising and unexpected ways, its edges unfinished and its direction unknown.
