Smokey / Teatro Alla Scala Milano

Smokey / Official ashtray of Teatro Alla Scala Milano

Brief (2nd Edition International Design Contest JTI Clean City Lab 2012)
Encourage the development of innovative sustainable solutions capable of facilitating the coexistence of smokers and non-smokers within the urban context.

Objective
Review the archetype of the contemporary outdoor ashtray making it a sculptural, simple and refined element.

Challenge
Intuitive affordance for smokers and simplify ashtray's emptying for cleaners.

Solution
Smokey redefines the archetype of the clothes hanger into an original typological reversal.
The result is a simple and elegant outdoor ashtray, capable of harmoniously relating both smokers and non-smokers. The simplicity of the shape denotes an anthropological attention to the act of the smoker, accompanying him to extinguish his cigarette; the stub, extinguished off the inside surface of the Y, slides gently below and disappears into the inner tank. This can be easily removed by a supplied tong.
The material importance of cast iron, other than giving it an almost totemic appearance, makes Smokey transversal also in the choice of the setting, which can also include historical and exclusive locations.
Starting from December 7th, jointly with the opening of the 2013/2014 season, Smokey becomes the official ashtray of Milan’s prestigious “Teatro alla Scala”.
