In 2015 I designed this book for the ISTD brief called ‘Roots’. It asked me to re-consider a key historical text of my choice. I designed the book shape to represent the subject of the book which is about the study of the common pea plant which is usually very tall. Gregor Mendel experimented on this plant and managed to figure out many of the principles of hereditary which still stand today. I experimented a lot with the typefaces and the type setting. The type is Adobe Caslon which I discovered is more robust than Baskerville. I chose it as it was very popular at the time Mendel published his results. It also has the OpenType feature of Proportional Oldstyle numbers which I needed for setting the numbers with the text.
