Anthology of Muddled Nightmares

“She awoke in a room she had never been in before.  Slowly she rose to her feet, her head and body swiveling to survey the surroundings.  What she saw only served to increase her confusion, as none of the four walls around her seemed to have a door.  The floor, a speckled blackish grey, was hard and polished.  The ceiling, much higher than she expected, seemed smooth and featureless.  The walls of the room were all identical - milky white in color, possessing a texture that was almost liquid.
Cautiously she approached one of the walls but as she neared it she stopped abruptly.  There was something deeply unsettling about the depth of the wall's surface.  It was dizzying, as if she could fall into it if she were not careful.  She returned to the center of the room where she first woke up and studied the other walls.  Each one had the same creamy consistency that caused her so much unease.  After staring at the walls for an extended period of time, she began to hear voices.  Faint at first, almost inaudible whispers, they grew in intensity until they echoed in her skull.
The voices beckoned her closer, closer to the surface of the walls.  She could make out the shape of limbs and hands seemingly swimming behind the walls.  Initially they circled the surface like sharks probing their prey, but soon they reached out and groped at her, outstretched fingers and hands clutching at the space around her.  She huddled into a ball in the center of the room, her eyes closed and her body rocking back and forth, commanding herself repeatedly to wake up before the groaning extremities reached her.” -M.D. Walter
