This is a personal work I created visually translating the song, “Mr. Grieves” from the Pixies Doolittle. I am a huge fan of their music, particularly Doolittle because of Frank Blacks curious, sometimes nonsensical stream of conscious lyrics:

What’s that floating in the water? Ol’ Neteptuna’s only daughter...

The imagery follows the storyline placed in the song… This was inspired in some part by Chipp Kidds QWE cover design. The cover eschews a single symbolic image he is stylistically known for a multi-piece that visually tells the story within modules of the layout. The song lyrics and delivery is song with an odd sense of sarcasm and danger – it is the Cheshire cats smile. I placed the skull, behind the frame to visually give the sense that there is something dangerous underlying the songs whimsy.
The imagery is kept mostly in sepia tone with color to punctuate and help balance the overall composition.
