BA Hons Graphic Design Year 3: FMP Election Statistics

The Statistics

My research had taken me down a path filled with numbers, statistics and graphs about general elections. As dull and cold as statistics can be, the resulting information you gain from them can be extremely interesting. For example the Labour Party, across 19 separate general elections since 1945, have won more parliamentary seats overall than the Conservative Party. However, with the inclusion of the 2010 Coalition between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, the Conservative Party have governed the UK more times than the Labour Party. This presented me with the question of how can these facts, figures and numbers be presented in the visual medium? As a natural progression I started to convert these statistics into graphs and charts that displayed the information I had gathered with the premise of form following function. I then started to consider how I could make these charts visually engaging and grab the attention of the viewer. Could I make these statistics captivating and informative? From this question I created two infographic style posters called “The General Stats” with the idea of representing the statistics themselves in a creative and unexpected way that didn’t have the dull and cold visual appearance of a standard chart or graph. Essentially I sought to create artwork that fitted the statistic it was showing, I wanted to display this statistic in certain way thus I created it that way. This lead to me considering statistics as artwork - what would it look like if the statistic dictated the appearance? This took me back to my earlier charts, and I set out certain parameters such as a predetermined space the statistic had to fit in to, and the use of a minimal colour palette. I then took the statistic down to its most basic form, for example one circle representing one seat, and allowed the statistic to dictate and form some rather abstract imagery.
