BA Hons Graphic Design Year 3: Book Cover

The brief requirements were to design a book cover for the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. A book cover should set the tone for the story hidden beneath it. The imagery I chose to use was a close up of a straight jackets buckles, that was a literal representation of a scene within the book where the main character is institutionalised in an attempt to reform him, as well as a visual metaphor for the restraints placed upon the society in the story by its government, just as the society is bound by the restrictions of its governing body the story is bound by the buckles of the straight jacket. as you open the book you open the buckle and release the story from within. I chose to use the type family Gill Sans as it is a typically English typeface which sets the scene for where the story is based in a dystopian British landscape, not only this but the humanist nature of the typeface that subtly breaks out of the rigid restrictions of the geometric glyphs were reflective of the main character's (Alex) desire to rebel against the tyrannical government within the story.
