WEEK FOUR: ADM Grad Show

9 May 2016
A trip to Nayang Technology Univerity's (NTU) School of Art, Design and Media Graduation show.
Reflection

I find visiting grad show and exhibitions a great source of inspiration. It regenerate my brain juices and widen my eyes to more possibilities. I get to see how others do their work, what is some other styles that I can reference to and inspire myself to do better than them. ADM grad show is one of my inspiration reservoir and I really enjoyed what I saw there.
One really cool idea of using UV rays to allow people to interact with the exhibited booth.
The following videos got me into thinking processes over and over again to figure out fully what it is depicting. Titled “To live and let free”, by Kevin Fee Kah Jun. Kevin shows us the conflicting relationship of an one party refusing to accommodate to the other interest, or when one party forces an accommodation from the other, sometimes disguised as a compromisation. I find each clips so intriguing and thought provoking. It makes me think about how we live each day with conflicts and compromisation. When things don’t go in the way we want it to be, we are left with two choices - to live or let free. Either we compromise or we go against it. Each short clips is so concise yet powerful to convey this message. The colour schemes and style used here is also eye-catching and striking. I feel that this series is very successful.
As a generally quite thrifty and environmentally friendly person, I really like this exhibition. I can totally relate to how Feng Ling feels. Her habits like collecting tissues from various eateries is something that I would do as well. I was even more convinced by her when she actually ask people to take picture of her name card so that we can save more papers. She is very daring and stand strong in her beliefs which I admire. Furthermore, her illustrations and layout design skills are really good too.
This part of the exhibition really show us that Feng Ling is very firm in her belief of saving the environment.
This is the series that I chosen out of all the others. The image printed on the cloth caught my attention and drew me closer to see what is there. This series is titled “Conscious” by Ong Jie En Coco. Coco expressed her views on how mankind is turning blind to the fact that the Earth is constantly being damaged by our acts.
Coco’s photographs are all sort of generic and hence are opened to the viewers to interpret and conclude the meaning behind each piece. This is how I interpret each photograph.

1. Despair. The girl look like she has given up in life, she is allowing the water or the pool to slowly pull her down and submerge her. However, her eyes look like she is still clenching onto something that she has yet to get over with.

2. Nature. The man with his bare foot is together with the nature as one. He is able to feel the nature surrounding him fully. 与大自然合二为一.

3. Debris. It seems like an earthquake just happened and the mankind suffered from it. The dust and all the ashes fell onto the man’s head showing us that we get what we give.
Brief

After feeling inspired by photographer Ong Jie En Coco, create a series of 3 photographs that relects your own views on the mankind and Earth. The series should resemble what Coco have created.
Experimental Process
Attempted to imitate Coco's style of showing feet and the nature, but for my own shot I decided to use a grass patch instead. Credits to my best friend for being my talent today.
Together, we picked up the yellow withered leaves on the ground and decided to use it as the props for the second shot.
Close up shot of my friend's face with the nature surrounding.
Final

Instead of showing the despair and negative side towards mankind and nature's relationship, I decided to show the opposite. I feature all the positive and upbeat emotions of exploring the nature in each shot. Here are the results.
1. A forest adventure.
Get some first hand encounters with the nature by baring your feet and entering the forest.
2. Handful of foliage
Collect, observe, sense. Let the nature be your playground.
3. Serenity
Find your inner peace and connect with cosmos. You will never know what you will discover in a place with no electronic gadgets.
