 Ancient Pueblo Peoples
During a long, rambling photo tour last year I found myself scrambling around several cliff dwelling sites in New Mexico. Some of the sites allowed you to climb ladders into the original caves and man made shelters carved out of the cliff face.
One of the sites: Bandelier Monument, was completely deserted while I was there. The only noises climbing up a 30 foot ladder into a 3500 year old cliff cave, were the same noises heard when people were living there. Birds and the wind and the small creek below.

Heres a quick excerpt from wiki:
Ancient Pueblo People or Ancestral Pueblo peoples were an ancient Native American culture centered on the present-day Four Corners area of the United States, comprising southern Utah, northern Arizona, northwest New Mexico, and southern Colorado. They lived in buildings called pueblos, designed so that they could lift entry ladders during enemy attacks, which provided security. Archaeologists referred to one of these cultural groups as the Anasazi, although the term is not preferred by contemporary Pueblo peoples.[1] The word Anaasází is Navajo for "Ancient Ones" or "Ancient Enemy".[2] Archaeologists still debate when this distinct culture emerged
