ELO
Light for TEDxO'Porto
Many of you may be familiar with the “TED” concept and spirit. But for those of you who aren’t, do not be alarmed. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK.

Due to the immense success of this organization and in the spirit of “ideas worth spreading”, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where “x” means independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
Since 2011, in Portugal, a country extremely opened to technology advances, great designers and many free and amazing thinkers, were held more then 20 TEDx events all over the country, where people can actually feel that their ideas and dreams are taken into account. The energy felt in these kind of events is indescribable, the life stories are breathtaking, and what i felt the entire time was the passion of those men and women that really love what they do.

Because all UNDA members are enthusiasts of these events (TED and TEDx), we had to participate, and for TEDxO’Porto (also held on April 28, 2012) we created a portable lamp called ELO (which means something like “bond” or “link”) to be distributed in the gift-bags. All of the Designs had to be original pieces with a ‘Portuguese soul’, which demonstrate the best from our country. With this in mind, we created a cork lamp, inspired in a woman’s bag, with a cutting tile shape on it.

Cork is Portugal; tile is Portugal!!!
