Shiatsu Self-Acupressure Tutorial

Shiatsu
A Self-Acupressure Tutorial
This project went through the process from searching the existing problems around people’s lives, finding solutions, collecting survey feedback, and deciding the final solution.

The problem I have chosen to resolve is the physical and psychological discomforts that many office workers and students are having right now due to the long-term stress from working on computers. My solution is to provide a series of Self-Acupressure Tutorial to allow people relief from the pain and stress at anytime and anywhere.

Concept: Shiatsu, Japanese for Acupressure, is one of the traditional medicinal treatments that started in China and has become very popular in Asia. The name Shiatsu makes it easier for western people to pronounce and is memorable. The theory behind acupressure is curing the physical and psychological discomfort by applying pressure to the acupoints within the human body. It is environment -friendly for it doesn’t need any resources, and it will not bring any side effects of chemical medication. Based on its name and the theory of acupressure, Shiatsu’s concept is to help relieve people’s stress by using natural physical treatments. The design is based on the concept of nature and organic to remind people of slowing down from their rapid lifestyle and stay balanced and healthy.

Creative Solution & final outcome: The final format of Shiatsu was created for the convenience of the market.
First, I used cards as the main format to show the content of the acupressure tutorial. All the cards have been categorized based on the pain and stress in different body parts, and each is designed with the little tabs on sides for easy reading and finding of information.

Besides, for the display format, I was inspired by the desk calendar. It not only can be open and placed on the desk, it can also be folded back and stored in office drawers. The size is very handy with the dimension of 9in X 4.5in, for easy travel.

As for the visual design part, I used wood and organic paper as the man visual elements, and simple metal rings were used for binding. The use of canvas ribbon as a detail enhances the delivery of the concept, nature and organic.

Overall, the design is simple with a feeling of nature, aligning with the brand concept. In addiction to the cards collection is a brochure for explaining the theory of acupressure. There is also a massage tool in the set.
