OBJECTIVE:
Design a Vietnam memorial park in Santa Barbara, California.
RESPONSE:
The design was inspired by my father, his friends, and clients that were all part of the Vietnam war. The principal element is the rusted i-beam - like a scar that never disappears but gradually becomes something else.
Design a Vietnam memorial park in Santa Barbara, California.
RESPONSE:
The design was inspired by my father, his friends, and clients that were all part of the Vietnam war. The principal element is the rusted i-beam - like a scar that never disappears but gradually becomes something else.
INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS:
1. I drew an initial concept sketch in 30 seconds to my response to the site and idea of war.
2. The i-beams are sandblasted before being exposed to the salt air and undergoing rapid oxidation. I wanted to emulate the same principal that might occur when a soldier arrives back from active duty.
3. I wanted the site to feel unstable and secure simultaneously.
