FUROSHIKI

Furoshiki (風呂敷) are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth traditionally used to transport clothes, gifts, or other goods. Furoshiki began to be used in the middle of the Nara period, in traditional Japanese baths (Onsen). To prevent a mix up of the bathers' clothes, the removed clothing was tied up in Furoshiki. Later the system of folding spread and was used by traders to protect their goods or gifts.

Made of two layers hand sewn together, the upper layer is made of a crisp paper touch 100% cotton layer and the bottom of a soft touch 100% rayon layer. The two layers are joined with Indigo five-gauge embroidery cotton, hand sewn at a 10mm spacing around the piece.

The cotton side is highlighted with a strong contrast sashiko stitch detailing, this detail both binds the layers and acts as a decorative stitch detail.

The rayon, under layer is specially dyed with a block fold and bound shibori dye.
