Clavicle Pin Test Apparatus

The goal of this project was to develop a machine that could accurately apply a measurable load to a broken human clavicle that was repaired by pin insertion surgery.  Pin insertion is the preferable procedure to an intrusive plate insertion and this machine can be used to test different pin geometries and configurations to minimize overall patient discomfort. The hollow tube represents where the clavicle will be attached.  The load is applied from an external linear actuator. The electric motor connected to the spur gear pairing applies a torsion that is decoupled from the bending moment occuring from the deflection of the roller along the ramp.  The spring allows a measurable compression to be recorded.  An optical encoder is attached to the rear exposed shaft of the motor to record the applied deflection.
