Library of libraries

The brief of this project was to design a new library in place of the existing library of Monash, Caulfield campus for the recreation of the Monash campus in the upcoming years. We were asked to create a library with the same ground area as the existing library. The library is to include the existing collections and serials within the current library as well as room for expansion, existing student services of Monash Connect, current offices as well as other extra activities such as a book shop, cafe, casual reading areas or 24 hour areas.
The concept of my design is derived from studying current and existing iconic libraries and the qualities of each of these libraries and incoporating them into a compulation to create a 'super library'.
Looking at libraries such as Book Mountain by MVRDV, Tama Art Library by Toyo Ito, Musashino Art University Museum & Library by Sou Fujimoto, Beinecke Library by S.O.M., Nembro Library by Archea, Stuttgart City Library by Yi Architects and Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito I extruded an area of a floor plan within each of these libraries to use as a base for the different spaces within the main library. Each of the different libraries that are mimiced are segragated into a confined space within the main library to create different literary spaces. These spaces are then used to categorise the library by subect and faculty; for instance, the area that mimics Beinecke Library may hold the rare books collection, whereas the area that mimics Stuttgart City Library may hold the science collection.
