I built a solar powered lantern made of recycled twigs and wire. This piece is designed to be hung from a tree branch in a residentail backyard.
Concept Statement
I am exploring the concept of how nature connects with rhythm and repetition. This lantern is an outdoor fixture in a residential setting that is found in a rustic or wood like atmosphere. It is placed in a small wooded area and hung from another tree branch. The lantern is made of wire that is tightly bound around repurposed tree branches. I researched nest building and basket weaving in order to create a natural but coherent piece. The organic materials of the tree branches and the constructed, geometric volumes of the wire create an interesting contrasting form. To create movement in the piece, I carefully place the branches to construct shadows that resemble the forest. The dense lantern has a loud and striking presence that resembles a hollow tree trunk. This lantern brings light in to the forest and brings the forest into the light as well as into the backyard.
