A series of editorial illustrations to go along with a podcast from This American Life called "Birds and Bees." Through three different stories, adults struggle with how to teach children about race, death and sex. The middle section of the podcast recounts a father's encounter with racism in his own life and how he could possibly relate such a huge and complicated topic to his young daughter.
Using the analogy of a swimming pool, the father describes the 'race' pool: filled with positive role models and customs. Conversely, the 'racism' pool is filled with horrible things. How can a young child possibly process all of this?
The father said that the only way to prepare a child was to give them the tools to know how to combat racism in their daily lives and hope they were equipped enough to deal with it.
After the child was equipped with the tools to combat racism, the father said the best way for a child to learn is to jump into the 'racism' pool, however deep it may be, and hope they would learn how to swim.
