First of the three works I did for T.Wolden's book.

Inspirations and overall mood was drawn from ivan Aivazovsky, "The Raft of the Medusa" (by Géricault ) and Bram Stoker

"The Ocean Storm"
Final work.

About 19x30 cm (Custom format)
Done with mechanical pencils with different 2B leads.

My usual workflow when making bigger traditional works is to make a lot of trials and sketches digitally and then work on the main piece itself. This way I can easily check and edit values in photoshop then proceed to get the same effect on paper. Digital sketches help me when I'm (or the client)  not sure about the values of the final work so I can create a digital preview image of approximate values/atmosphere of the traiditonal work.
This is the first of three digital sketches/trials for this. The primary goal is the vertical format and medium distance from the ship. This one could preview the storm and the crew of the ship.

2nd version was adapted to horizontal format with the option to make the land more visible.

The second digital trial and sketch idea was to show the stormy seas and the weather more. Ship is much, much smaller so crew was impossible to show in this one.

Second version is adapted to vertical format.

Third digital trial/sketch places focus on the crew.
