Sasol Young Explorer App Series
Working on this app series has been one of my favourite projects this year. The brief was to design an educational app series based on the 'My First Book of' series published by Struik Nature. The project became something so much more than any of us working on it anticipated - so much more than just the sum of its parts. The best part of this project, seeing kids interacting with it and seeing just how much fun they have!
Right from the start, while still conseptualising and planning this project, I really wanted to focus on high quality graphics throughout the process. I wanted to design something that was timeless, that could endear itself to its audience, and that would assure parents, who bought it for thier little ones, they had purchased something of real value. The following 5 graphics are screenshots from the app.
As part of that focus on quality, I worked with our editor (a real nature lover) to choose source photographs of the environment one would find each species in. I then created photo composites, blending each species' scene into its own artwork. I felt that the scene's were quite important. They contributed strongly to the feel of the app, as well as acted as a natural placeholder for all the apps' features.

I love the idea of marketing projects that are created by the target market itself and so I proposed that we get parents to take mobile phone videos of thier kids interacting with our app. I then edited the videos into their own commercials and added them to the YouTube channel for people to watch and easilly share the videos. The result was adorable.
