Brand Identity for 'Agam the band'

The Brief.
The idea was to use THEYYAM as a main element, which would have strong recall from our earlier designs but looked new and fresh. Other elements were to include references of the folklore and arts of Kerala and Tamilnadu. When the brief was received, I decided to give it a one-big-shot by doing a doodle with Theyyam with elements of Tamilnadu prog-rock and metal interfaces, along with the a touch of Keralite folklores and arts.
The design idea!
A style based on the Indian folklore art, which showcased the face of Theyyam (Bhagavathy Theyyam) accompanied by various instruments and designs that are seen in the Theyyam hood and clothes.
Why this style was selected? It was found in our research that the prog-rock and blues music art have similar design style. Following these music genres, a completely new design could be set around the folklore of Theyyam.
The Scribble:-
Intentionally, many details of the face were left by the artist because the design was supposed to match the style of folklore art. This meant that there were no principles of drawing like anatomy or proportion to be used in here; only artistic enumeration. While it sounded good, it was not practical to give that feel and attitude if we were not follow the rules. After hours of scribbling, I realized that leaving put the details just wouldn’t deny justice the piece of art, but would also harm the art on its whole.
Keeping both detailed and very low detailed work together, I added more elements to the undetailed version and cut down some elements from the detailed version. This was done because it was felt that if it was more detailed, the breathing space on the illustration of the face part would be compromised.
With this, I added both the head cover and jewelries of the BHAGAVATHY THEYYAM. Even then, I faced a new iteration on the start of every day. At times I even changed the whole design and start from a white chart.
The very first design was filled up many instruments, curves and flowers all around the face and hood. This being an unbalanced form faced many iterations and scribbles, after which I developed the mirror design. This was done because, if noticed, ALL the designs of Theyyam are flipped horizontally.
Instruments such as madhalam and komb were also showcased to give it a feel of Tamilnadu, and for the feel of Kerala, I added pookkula and idakka. It was difficult to work on small strokes and adding details, for every additional details I used 0.1 to 0.3 Copic multiliners. It took days and night to make what it is now
