BCIT School of Business to pull plug on social media for one week
BURNABY, BC- At 8:00 a.m. today, more than 300 students of the BCIT School of Business began a campaign to “Unplug for Africa.” The campaign challenges students to voluntarily cease all use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well as text messaging on their cell phones until 10:00 p.m. on October 21. The campaign requires all participants at the BCIT Burnaby campus to donate a minimum of $20 to “unplug” as a way to gather proceeds that will go towards Red Cross’ relief efforts in Africa’s most impoverished regions.

The “Unplug for Africa” campaign kicked off earlier this morning at the Vancouver Board of Trade through a sponsored speech given by its social media guru key note speaker Daniel Sieberg. Daniel is a renowned host/writer for ABC News and has become an expert in understanding the benefits and perils of social media to students and workers today. Daniel also wrote “The Digital Diet”: The four step plan to break your tech addiction and regain balance in your life. According to Daniel, “in the last decade, we’ve transitioned from being a culture that uses technology to being one that is completely absorbed by it”.

As one of the most reputable post secondary institutions in British Columbia, BCIT recognized these changes and pushed for this campaign seeing the need for a tech/life balance especially among its students. According to Robin Hemmingsen, the dean of the BCIT School of Business, “Unplug for Africa gives BCIT students a chance to prove not only to themselves but to their friends, families, colleagues and future employers that they do have the power to control technology and that technology doesn’t control them...future employers are looking for focused, efficient and productive contributors to their business.”

Unplug for Africa isn’t about giving up technology forever either according to the dean, “it’s about rediscovering the balance...giving priority to face-to-face interactions and knowing when to focus our full attention on work demands, family and friends and ofcourse social issues”. Various week long activities will take place at the BCIT Burnaby campus that will help educate students on proper social media use. Students will participate in seminars, contests and have the opportunity to attend a key note speech by Daniel Sieberg on October 19 on how they can live with in harmony with technology and social media.

Raphi Agregado who is a student in the BCIT School of Business Marketing Management Program and who is “Unplugging for Africa” said “I can’t wait to unplug social media for one whole week. It will be tough, but it’s good to know it’s also being done for our own learning and for a good cause.” Many students on campus have expressed both anxiety and excitment for the week long campaign but according to its organizers, “Unplug for Africa is really about discovering what it’s like to just be human again”. The BCIT community is standing strong this week not only in taking control over technology and becoming more responsible users but also in helping a greater cause.

(SCENARIO, BC HYDRO SMART METER OPPOSITION)

The Hefty Price of Being Smart
A wise man once said that “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” It appears as if BC Hydro and Itron, the manufacturer of its new Smart Meters chose to purposely ignore this wise piece of advice in order to satisfy their greed to advance their own interests. BC Hydro is set to spend more than $1 Billion in replacing your traditional electric meters with controversial Smart Meters that will not benefit you the consumer in any way.

There are a number supporters to the Smart Meter Program such as Energy Minister Coleman who was quoted saying, “These new smart meters will provide many benefits to B.C. families and businesses, helping them save money and manage their energy consumption properly.” BC Hydro has also released numerous press releases claiming that only a very small portion of the consumer population already with Smart Meters have complained when in fact this is not true. Many residents have wisely ignored these sugar coating statements and have become active in the fight against the installation of these “revolutionary” Smart Meters in their homes. Protestors have expressed their views and support regarding this matter which is evident in the thousands of signatures collected in various petitions to stop the installation of these meters.

Concerns regarding these meters which range from higher consumption charges, privacy matters and even health effects. According to consumers with Smart Meters, they have seen an inexplicable increase in their utility bills since installing the Smart Meters in their homes. Many do not understand this sudden increase in charges claiming the meters are not so smart after all and are reporting false readings. Besides inaccurate readings, many consumers are also concerned for their privacy, claiming with the tracking technology of the Smart Meters, BC Hydro can now sell private information about its consumer’s consumption behaviour to other interested corporations. John Donut a Smart Meter user expressed his concerns saying, “I fear that they may collect our family’s personal information, when we go on vacation, what time we go to sleep…who knows what they will do with it.” Speaking to various individuals, their main concern has been its linked health effects.
Many consumers have complained of headaches, nausea and sleeplessness since the installation of Smart Meters in their homes. Professor Johansson, from the World Health Organization, has warned consumers that these Smart Meters that are usually found close to rooms, kitchens and other living areas emit dangerous radiation, those of the carcinogenic type. Professor Johansson further explains the effects of radiation from devices such as the Smart Meter in his articles at www.worldhealthorganization.org . In his articles you will find that the health effects of these radioactive meters are irreversible and unnecessary.

Truly there exists a hefty price for consumers to live “smart”, but as a consumer, you have the right to put an end to this. Voice out your concerns and join our movement. Protect yourself from higher monthly charges, invasion of privacy and irreversible health effects. Support stopsmartmeters.org and help us fight for your security and safety. Follow our efforts through this blog as we help protect you, the consumer.
