Wellcome Collection
2014

The brief issued by the Wellcome Collection asked for a hybrid space that functions between a library, a gallery and a social space. Traditional museum design was challenged by the fact that visitors faced virtually no restrictions. Everything, except for some fragile sculptures, is available to be touched, rummaged, read, written on, and played with. As part of a team with AOC Architects, objectif was responsible for all printed materials as well as signage. In line with AOC’s concept we designed the graphics to be durable, yet accessible. Labels and signage were deliberately kept to a minimum, to avoid an overly didactic tone within the space. The challenge consisted in devising design devices that invite the audience to participate and attune to the space, so that they feel comfortable enough to move about freely.
