The Viper Probe Droid features in the opening act of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.  It discovers the rebel’s Echo Base on Hoth and reports this back to Darth Vader aboard his Super Star Destroyer.

 

This report leads directly to the Empire’s ground assault on Hoth and the battle that follows.  This battle introduced the iconic AT-AT walkers and feature some ground breaking stop motion.
