Kate Miller's profile

Laphroaig Whisky

For one of our final projects, we were asked to choose a Scottish Whisky and celebrate it; producing a one-off limited edition bottle. We had to research our chosen whisky and find an interesting story or fact about it and produce and adaption of the bottle.

I chose the iconic Islay malt; Laphroaig. Which is full bodied, smoky with hints of iodine, seaweed and ginger.

After reading John Lamond's 'Le Snob - Whisky' book I found that the distillery is situated on the coast, and in times of bad eather it would face extremely high storm damage bills and the following day after the distillery would be found to be covered in seaweed.

I decided that I would cover my bottle in seaweed to have the same appearance as if it had been left out in the storm.
After many differnt trials I found that the most effective way for me to make seaweed for my bottle was knitting. I was inspired by the work of Alexander McQueen and how a lot of his clothes he would make to perfection and then destroy. I included in my knitting; knots, dropped stitches and loose stitching to make it imperfect and destroyed.
I displayed the whisky on a bed of sand and shells collected from the West coast of Scotland.
"The flavour is big-bodied, dry and of peat smoke with a sweetness, tarry oranges and honeyed seaweed; finishing spicy with sweetly toasted oak and a bonfire on the beach."
Thank you!
