Tape Dispenser Concept

Brief

This concept was designed by hand using the Rapid Visualization technique. The task was to create an extravagant and beautiful tape dispenser utilizing wood, chrome, plastic, and marble textures. The result was a functional chrome housing, wood handle, and a plastic rotating insert for the tape to go on. The marble stand allows the dispenser to be beautifully displayed on any desk.
Chrome Texture

As I began sketching and experimenting with chrome, I started to favor the sphere and cylinder.  I admired the way that the horizon lines reflected on curved and rounded surfaces.
Wood Grain

I achieved a wood grain texture with a mixture of pastels and Bestine solvent. I applied the wash with a cotton round and long even brush strokes.
Marble

Marble texture was created with pastel dust and a cotton round. Dabbing the cotton in different colored pastel dust piles, then blotting them on in numerous firm pats achieved the desired affect. I experimented with different materials like white out, graphite, and colored pencil for the grain and cracks in the marble.
Inspiration

Spherical and cylindrical designs with a lick of industrial flair inspired my design. The round functionality of the “Bubble Tape” dispenser and the General Lee’s rally rims were clear influences.
Sketching/ Ideation

As I began sketching, I focused on figuring out the basic shape I would use for the dispenser. I eventually landed on the chrome ball with wood handle.  I felt that the organic wood  grain  handle complimented the industrial chrome body very nicely. Once I decided on the basic shape, I incorporated a marble display stand and a removable metal branding plate on top of the handle.
