The beauty of damage

EN: Bory Tucholskie National Park is a place that we decided to interpret.  We stayed in Poland and focused on what surrounds us, what is the nearest and most beautiful- forests, trees. Bory Tucholskie is mainly pine forests. Trees even reach up to 30 meters in height! In 2012, the park has undergone a whirlwind. Tornado destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest and left an incredible trail. This weather phenomenon is quite rare in Poland, so unique.
I located my object  on the border of forest and woodless area.  Inspiration for our buildings was satelite image of Bory Tucholskie area where there are visible rectangular fields without trees arranged in “a pattern”, rhythm;  the forest, the tree, landscape of the edge of forest on the border with woodless area and also Slavic mythology (legends associated with the history of our Polish ancestors).

Main objectives of the project:
-appreciate and emphasize local wildlife landscapes,
-promotion of Polish territories abroad;
-paying more attention to residents of Poland for what occurs near them;
-get acquainted with the culture heritage - Slavic myths and legends;
-observation and study of nature;
-show amazing, unusual aesthetic and sensual values of the forest (unique images, sensory perception of the forest, inducing different emotions and moods).

I invite visitors to a journey/ walking/ wander, to familiarize yourself with the tree, to discover forest, to watch it from different perspectives, to admire the power (might) of nature!
Every point or object of the building complex  can be describe with one word which illustrates the atmosphere of the space and appearing frames (images). (Terms are the result of the “tree of words”- associations connected with the forest and its interpretation).
In Slavic mythology tree is a very important and often appearing  symbol. It is a tripartite division of the world: the trunk- world of the living, the earth;  the treetop- the heavens;  the roots- world of the dead (where souls live). In my Interpretation Centre we can find in the Slavic universe! From the highest floors we admire the treetops and the trail left by a tornado; being among the tree trunks- their power/might and rhythmic, numerous system ( arrangement), the shadow play; we smell the scent of the forest, we hear its hum… We can be also in the lowest part- in the roots. Going by underground tunnels leading to the buildings, we observe the root system, the soil’s layers ...

The proposed project of the Interpretation Centre has to awake human’s sensitivity to nature which surrounds us and raises the consciousness of functions of the forest (productive, ecological, social). Stop and think for a moment about the splendor and might(power) of the nature; contemplate its beauty and learn from it!
-          Entering to the first building, before we get to the reception, we follow by the labyrinth slowly making familiar with the nature, with the forest. Exterior enters/penetrates to the interior.
-          Being in the treetops we see also “the river of emptiness” caused by tornado. Something what terrifies and delights.
-          Some parts of buildings are leaning, as some trees deflected by the wind during a tornado.
-          Minimalist interiors are arranged by the shadows given by the forest. Thus, the spaces are changing all the time. (such as forest depending on the time of year and time of day)
-          In the building partly located in the woodless area we discover “something”  that is “unknown” for us, the huge contrast to the views that we have seen so far during the hike. Dismay and admiration.
