'The Gertrude' Superyacht - Superman Returns (2006)

Production Designer: Guy Dyas

I was given the task to develop the 3D Rhino models of 'The Gertrude' superyacht for Superman Returns after the production moved from L.A. to Sydney. Significant progress had already been made, but Production Designer Guy Dyas wanted to push the design further in many parts of the yacht. The main areas we developed were the Foredeck, Bridge, Marine Gallery, Pool Deck and all interior sets. The underside of the hull was also re-worked. After the 3D modelling was complete, I generated technical drawings for the construction department to build the sets. A selection of these drawings are shown at the end of this page.

Interior 'Marine Gallery'. This was the main cabin of the yacht, fully equiped with fire place, pool table, library, grand piano and glass flooring to view the aquafauna under the ship. These partially textured grey-scale 'clay renders' were useful to read the form without being too concerned with materials and finishes. Modelled in Rhino, rendered in Octane for Rhino.

Interior Bridge. This set was built on a motion base and was subjected to SFX wind and rain. Modelled in Rhino, rendered in Octane for Rhino
Interior Corridor. We used a series of modular units which could be reconfigured to play for different parts of the ship's interior. Modelled in Rhino, rendered in Octane for Rhino
Photo of the Marine Gallery set build. The hanging lights were rigged to sway as required to give the illusion the boat was rocking on the water. The vents beside the sitting area were practical. A necessity to bring in cool air to counteract the heat from all the practical lighting.

General arrangement of the full yacht
Schematic section of the full yacht. Even though we didn't build all the interiors shown in this section, Guy Dyas wanted to create a complete rationale for the layout of the ship.
A schematic showing the main set builds. We also built a 'wig room' and commercial style kitchen pantry.
