ESM3 Typeface
The reinterpretation of a typographic masterpiece
ESM3 is a typeface based on the skeleton of Erik Spiekermann’s FF Meta. This project was part of the class Typography Studio I at SCAD during winter quarter 2011.
Starting with research about Erik Spiekermann and his typeface FF Meta, the project involved an in-depth analysis of different glyphs from the original typeface, as well as different stylistic explorations for the redesign. The goal was to create an entire uppercase alphabet.
ESM3 features a stronger calligraphic reference than the original FF Meta, adding a little more personality to the letterforms. This is something that FF Meta, originally based on a design for the german federal mail (Bundespost) as a corporate typeface, was not intended to express.
The presented book documents the entire research and design process. IT was submitted to the Adobe Design Achievement Awards in 2011 where it was selected as a semifinalist.

The book has 52 pages and documents the entire research and design process. The color scheme pays homage to the design of FontFont
Each chapter has its own icon, designed for the chapter covers and the header of each page
The book includes all the steps taken during the process, as well as the analysis of the original typeface's key glyphs.
Each letter was corrected individually, to assure a balanced appearance, as well as a harmonious interplay with other letters.
At the end, the typeface is shown in use, set at 8 point size with different leadings.
