Needle and Thread

Embroidery is an endangered craft. People have developed a variety of styles and techniques around the world over many years, but still, fewer and fewer people are developing a love for the craft. There are many possible reasons for this, but the most obvious is technology. With the development of technology, crafts have found their demise. People are choosing to engage their time with swiping screens and pressing buttons. One of the things that all hand crafts have in common is the time necessary to  develop, learn, perfect skills. Without time being devoted to crafts, their practice is dying.

Devotion is the key word. How do you decide what to devote your time to? Outside the world of screens, where do you spend your time? My goal is to give the viewer a simple introduction to the world of needle and thread, in  order to see what the human hand is capable of with simple tools that have existed for centuries. In order to understand whether the world of embroidery should be saved, one must take the time to appreciate what one’s own hands can do with the craft. You have to first take it out of the world of your grandmother’s drawer and bring it into the world of art and expression. Only then, after you have attempted it, should you decide if embroidery is worth saving.

A person works hard and devotes their time to their crafts because he or she  loves it. One craft is not more important than another. Everyone should be able practice  what they love.
