A Large scale poster (24x36in) I made for a project. I had to take an article from the U.N Declaration of Human Rights and translate it into a poster design. I chose article 19 which states "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, this includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek , recieve and input information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers."

To show the freedom of expression and how it is an issue, I depicted a high contrast scene of a man being bound up and entangled in red and white ribbons, thereby snaring him. The ribbons meant to be the 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes of the american flag are meant to be the American society which is supposed to protect his rights is instead restricting his speech by covering his eye, mouth, movement, etc. "Free to remain silent" is a title of play-on words. "Free to speak" mixed with the miranda right, "Right to remain silent" depicts the right to both speak and not speak in an ironic way. Also on each flag stripe is a quote pertaining to the issue of Free Speech. Some examples are the following in case its too small to read on the screen:

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent on the about the things that matter." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
"I do not agree with what you have to say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." ~ Voltaire
"Here's a nation, one of the founding pillars was freedom of speech and freedom of expression. And yet, we have imposed upon people restrictions on what they can say, on what they can think. And the media is the largest proponent of this, crucifying people who say things really quite innocently." ~ Benjamin Carson
