In Illustrator I recreated an image of Super Mario using the pen tool. To achieve the curved looked on his nose and facial features I used gradients to color his face. They go from a light color to darker, to show where the light is hitting him. I downloaded a Font similar to that used in Super Mario games and applied different colors to each letters to give it a fun feel.
