Alexander McQueen for Oso Magazine (Italy)
Ink on Vellum
I did this portrait of Alexander Mcqueen in March of 2010, just after he died. Oso Magazine had written an article about his work over the winter; I think it was a celebratory piece designed to inspire. His sudden death in February cast a new light on everything, and by the time I did the portrait, everything about McQueen had become much more reflective. And of course, mournful. I think there is something about McQueen, specifically, that connected with his fans on an intensely private, personal level. I think that connection remains, and is almost spiritual, for a lot of people. Even in the realms of high art and performance, few people, and definitely few of his contemporaries, attain anything near that level of fraternity.
