Express Yourself for autism campaign

MSL Group designer led- cataloguing collections

The Brief

You are required to catalogue a collection in two days and then provide a context for the accumulated information. There should be three final applications: 2D, 3D and virtual.

My Collection: facial expressions
Applying my collection to an autism awareness campaign

‘Express Yourself for autism’

The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about the difficulties autistic people face in relation to reading expressions and communicating but also to educate children in schools and adults in the workplace about autism.
3D application: ‘Express Yourself’ photo-booth

To instantly engage people Express Yourself photo-booths will be installed all over the UK, in supermarkets, shopping centres, offices, schools and city streets.

To surprise and intrigue the audience, the photo-booths won’t have any reference to autism and will just appear to be ordinary booths. But instead of printing normal photos, the portraits will be covered with colour and the faces will be hidden behind descriptions of the facial expression. On the back of the printed images will be information about autism and the Express Yourself campaign.
2D application: print campaign

For the 2D application the typographic portraits collected through the Express Yourself photo-booths will be printed on posters and billboards to draw attention to the campaign. Each billboard or poster will be unique, using a variety of different of written facial expressions. Some of the larger billboards will focus on the message ‘1 in 100 people in the UK have autism’ and others will just show ‘Express Yourself for autism’.
Express Yourself for autism at school

Education about autism should start at a young age so as an extension of the campaign the Express Yourself booths will be installed in schools and as well as printing the typographic portraits they will also educate the children about autism.
Express Yourself for autism at work

One of the big problems autistic adults face is trying to get employment. More than a quarter of graduates with autism are unemployed, the highest rate of any disability so it is consequently important for the Express Yourself campaign to reach the workplace.

To target people in the workplace the typographic photo-booth portraits will be displayed on elevator lifts and if someone supports the campaign in the workplace they can where an Express Yourself business name tag.
Virtual application: social media campaign

Alongside the photo-booths and print awareness campaign will be a Twitter and Facebook social media campaign #expressyourself for autism. People are encouraged to take photos or videos of themselves pulling an expression and then upload it to Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #expressyourselfforautism.

The social media campaign will be linked with an app which acts as a virtual photo-booth as well as a platform to provide more information about the campaign and autism. If the campaign was successful the app would become much more developed and would be more of an educational tool for autistic children as well as helping autistic adults with finding employment.
