Book Cover Project

This project was the redesign of the cover of a book intended to be gutted and turned into a sketch journal. The book I chose was called "American Backgrounds" and it was to be designed in the style of a famou designer. The designer I chose was Milton Glaser.

In the attached work in progress, I outlined four of Glasers works in my design brief as potential inspiration and ended up using two of them to come up with this design. I used the colours from Glasers iconinc Dylan poster and the geometric shapes from "The Milton Glaser Poster Book".

The audience for the original book were children in around the 8-13 range. It was a collection of stories and poems from famous authors and poets throughout American history. Thus, the task was to not only do this in Glaser's style, but to make sure it was appropriate to the audience for the book.

The design concept was to use the covered wagon to represent America's past, since it played such a large role throughout this country's history. On the cover, I wanted it to feel like the sun is shining upon the front of the wagon, as well as the landscape that can be seen within. The back cover was the opposite, a silhouette and that very sun seen through the wagon, setting to signify the end of the book.
