Design a way for communities to better connect to and celebrate heritage.

My response was a market, called Portside, which celebrated the goods which Falmouth has imported throughout its past.

Falmouth’s port has played a crucial role in international trade being one of the main places where goods from across the world were imported. It also played a crucial role in Darwin’s HMS Beagle voyage and more recently, Ellen MacArthur’s world record-breaking endeavour. This spirit of discovery is truly essential to Falmouth and its port and should be celebrated. There is currently a lack of awareness of Falmouth’s port history providing an opportunity to create something which allows the people of Falmouth to celebrate their heritage.
In order to inform the public about the history of the port and heritage of Falmouth, there is a need for platforms which communicate this message. Utilising the town environment, information boards and leaflet stands will appear across Falmouth enabling the public to engage with the story of Falmouth away from the market itself.
An accompanying website would list upcoming events and also serve as a tool for education. Schools could use the website as a resource, allowing students to engage with our past and move towards developing an understanding of the future.
