Dakota
Public Transit Art
2007 | Competition Submission
The Land Transport Authority launched a design competition for art works to be integrated into the stations of the new Circle Line of the MRT system in Singapore. The station Dakota was named after an adjacent housing estate Dakota Crescent, which took its name from the C47 Dakota planes that used to land at the old airport in the vicinity.
Being located at the slab wall between the concourse and platform levels, facing stairs and escalators, the artwork had the potential of visually connecting the two levels. A long sculpture hugging the wall, with multiple reflective surfaces, would reflect passenger movements at the concourse down to the platform, and train movements up to the concourse.

As the theme of the competition was "Art and Technology", the proposal attempted to capture and "solidify" the elegant flight of the C47 Dakota, in a linear form parallel to the train movement. The 3D scripting process to derive the cross sections for the profile strips was also an illustration of technology and art.

The proposal won second prize among the submissions for this station.
