Canis Major is a poem written by Robert Lee Frost about a man gazing at the vast universe. This person is directing his eyes, thoughts, and feelings towards the constellation of Canis Major, one of Ptolemy’s 48 constellations, that in Latin translates as “Greater Dog.” This constellation is accompanied by a smaller constellation called Canis Minor or “Lesser Dog” and both are commonly represented as following the constellation of Orion The Hunter. Canis Major contains the brightest star visible form the earth, Sirius known as the “Dog Star.” The constellation is located in the souther celestial hemisphere and the milky way passes through it. Canis Major is visible in the northern hemisphere during the months of November trough March and in the south from October to May.

Canis Major
The great Overdog
That heavenly beast
With a star in one eye
Gives a leap in the east.
He dances upright
All the way to the west
And never once drops
On his forefeet to rest.
I’m a poor underdog,
But to-night I will bark
With the great Overdog
That romps through the dark.
