Automated Cheese Grater

Our goal was to design an effective automated cheese grater. This project involved an extensive knowledge of mechanism design (both the physics and design perspective), machining ability and SolidWorks.

We used a slider crank mechanism for the cheese grater. The slider was made out of Delrin and slides in a standard 80-20 beam. The slider is attached to the cheese grate which moves along with the slider that fits in the beam. The linkages are designed to ensure that the cheese grater is able to pass through entire piece of cheese. The driver link specifies the total travel distance of the grate. Our driver link is made to be 1.2 inches so the grate travels 2.4 inches; maximizing the available space on the grater. The motor is attached to the driver link using a 4-40 set screw. The motor is held in place with a motor clamp that is water jet and then bored out to fit the motor perfectly. This motor clamp is placed on top of a motor stand to give it the right height to work with the cheese slider mechanism.
