Titanic Wreck Painting

This is a digital painting that I created in 2012 for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. For this painting, I particularly attempted to imitate the work of oceanographer, historian, and ship artist extraordinare Ken Marschall (http://www.kenmarschall.com/)
I built a very rough model of the Titanic in Lightwave, which helped me to get the perspective right in this painting: https://www.behance.net/gallery/24372225/Morning-Titanic-Painting. I carefully smashed that model to match the damage that Bob Ballard discovered when he photographed the wrek, and used it to find a good angle that shows off the details of the deck and damage to the hull, and then I began painting over that in Photoshop. It was difficult to find a balance between the light needed to see the wreck, and the darkness of 12,500 feet below the surface, between the monochrome nature of the ocean depths and the colored paint that still remains.
This is how Titanic would likely have looked in 1962, on the 50th anniversary of her sinking. When she was discovered in 1986, there was considerably more corrosion than I have depicted here. When the 150th anniversary rolls around, there won't be much left.
