Objective
To create compelling visual compositions by only using the letters of your name. The intent is to gain a
better understanding and appreciation of how type in and of itself can create wonderfully interesting
and compelling visual ideas that are unique to graphic design.
Parameters
The compositions will be based on your initials of your first, middle, and last name. Each composition
will be in a 8.5x11 inch format. Forms must be black with white background. This is a 2 piece project.
There are 2 typefaces to use in this project. The typefaces are your only design elements allowed.
Do a design using the following:
- Helvetica or Arial
- Your choice of Garamond, Century, Baskerville or Bodoni
Carefully use contrast between black and white to create an intriguing composition. Use size and proportion
to create a balance between the letters. These should almost be an abstract image, but the
type must be readable.
- You can only use the letters as the shapes, no other element is to be used.
- Strive to create a unique composition that is not an obvious use of the letters.
- Only the letters of your first, middle, and last name in the original format of the type.
- Do not distort or change the shape of the type in any way- other than in size or rotation.
• Explore various sizes with the letterforms and interaction that each has with the other shapes.
• Final size of page is 8.5x11
• Mount on 15x20 black matte board
