Making a Japanese soft vinyl toy: Wananeko

Toy Design
Previously released as a resin figure, Wananeko is back, this time as a Japanese soft vinyl (aka sofubi) toy.
Since producing a soft vinyl toy requires a bigger investment, I thought of using a crowdfunding source and ended up posting my project on IndieGoGo.
For this new toy, I had to adapt the old version for soft vinyl production in Japan so a few changes had to be made and I could also add new gimmicks to the figure to improve it.

I worked along with Victor Marin from Invictus Designs to make this new piece based on the original sculpture by Cristina Ravenna, and we made the following changes:

1. The new toy is bigger than the old one, being now 5,9" tall.
2. The soft vinyl version will be articulated, with 5 points of articulation.
3. It will also have interchangeable hands to arm up your cat however you like.
4. Several adjustments had to be made in order to make the figure suitable for vinyl casting, which works very different than resin casting.
In order to produce this figure in Japan, I needed to ask for $6,000 on IndieGoGo.
Asking for money on a crowdfunding site is a challenging and scary adventure. At least that's what I think. I've seen many good projects fail, but also lots of ideas getting funded. I made a thorough study of cases, looking at toy projects especifically. Then I came up with my own project, full of eye-catching rewards for my backers.

These are some of the rewards, which of course include getting the soft vinyl figure.

I also created a totally new figure for this project: the Baby version of Wananeko, from before he was a demon!
This figure is made of resin, and while the various painted resin versions are only available through this IndieGoGo, but I've set a $8,000 stretch goal that if met will allow me to produce this figure in soft vinyl too, adding a piece to the reward of those who pledged for the original Wananeko vinyl for free!
There are some cool one-off and exclusive pieces painted by me and a couple of artist friends too!
But there's also a lot of cool merchandising that you can get for less money and still contribute to make this project a reality! T-Shirts, badges, stickers, keychains...
Thank you so much for checking out this project!
Please remember that you can still back it on IndieGoGo!
